When screening tenants, can I legally ask about children: number and ages? We live in the other house on our property and I do not the liability.

You can avoid this altogether by scheduling a personal viewing and having the potential renter come over in person with whomever he or she chooses to bring over; then you can bring this into casual conversation. I “weeded out” a couple of pot heads, an entitled sub-550 credit score sob story with an emotional support animal, and a party of five that was supposedly a single guy. Word to the wise; show your own place and screen your own people on the phone first, and then perform your own private showings.
